Taleed, which translates from Arabic to “Old and Inherited,” is a free-standing cabinet made from dyed palm tree leaves. The UAE’s abundant supply of palm leaves offers a valuable resource with a wide range of sustainable applications. Taleed incorporates a new marquetry technique, using dyed palm leaves with an indigo powder stain reminiscent of the iconic burqa’a (women’s face covering).
Drawing inspiration from our grandmothers, who showcased traditional face coverings in various museums across the UAE to promote women’s empowerment, preserve Emirati identity, and emphasize the importance of heritage, the burqa’a made from indigo-dyed fabric serves as a powerful reminder of tradition. The indigo powder leaves a mark known as “Buqam” when women interact, symbolizing a memory or the lastinwg impact of an event or action. Whether on the nose or cheeks, this mark conveys the warmth, love, and purity that our grandmothers always offered.
The diamond pattern created with palm tree leaves adds visual richness and depth, celebrating UAE culture through the roots of the palm tree. The tall, irregular design symbolizes women’s empowerment and resilience, while the rounded and curved elements reflect the grace, beauty, and meticulous craftsmanship of this handmade piece that evokes the burqa’a form. The gaps in the front elevation narrate the intricate design process.
Taleed is crafted to share the narrative of women’s craftsmanship and the significance of UAE culture, advocating for the preservation of our traditions while rejuvenating old materials and techniques in innovative ways, both locally and internationally. Taleed also serves as a bridge between generations, connecting the wisdom of the past with the creativity of the present, ensuring that the legacy of our ancestors continues to inspire future innovations in design and craftsmanship.
